Planning

Each room is a personal and unique space.

For standard homes we recommend the following guidelines:

Kitchens and bathrooms
1.2m spacing between units.
Living rooms and bedrooms
1.8m spacing between units.

Standard lighting recommendations state the distance between the wall and downlights should be half the distance as length between the lights.

We generally recommend having 1m space from a wall edge where possible.

A Zuma requires a 95mm Hole saw bit to create the holes in your ceiling cavity.

You will require 131mm from the fair face of the ceiling to install a Zuma Lumisonic.

This will be checked as part of our Survey offering. If you are installing Zumas as part of a project, please check with your designer or contractor.

Yes, drivers for these systems are available.

Zuma can be best controlled from the central controller rather than downstream of dimming modules for the best user experience.

Alternatively it can be treated as a ‘switched load’ which will power up by default to 50% brightness and subsequently give you granular control using the Zuma app or Alexa.

We would typically say up to 5 meters between the two furthest Zumas in a room should be fine.

Yes. If you use open/closed switches you can wire a simple control connection to the main Zuma unit.

These switches could be push on/off or rocker types to suit.

Depending on your Zuma room solution this might be the case.

As part of your order, Zuma are offering a complimentary virtual Survey where a trained Zuma installer will visit your install location to recommended what’s needed to help support a smooth installation.

Yes, Zuma has a rating of IP65. Therefore it can be installed in bathrooms, as well as other rooms within the home.

The Zuma app is available for both iOS and Android.

A download link is available for each at the bottom of this page.

At the moment connecting via ethernet is not supported. However, Zuma devices do have a USB-C connector port which is for diagnostics.

Note: The USB-C connection port on a Zuma device is a proprietary service port. Connecting a Non-Zuma device could damage your product and invalidate your warranty.

At least one Zuma Lumisonic is required in a Zuma Luminaire area.

Zuma works like other devices on your home network. If you can view content from YouTube and stream audio from services like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Prime/Unlimited Music, and TIDAL, you’ll be fine.

As part of the virtual Survey, we’ll help check to ensure that you’re all good to install and enjoy.

Our network requirements are broadband with a minimum download speed of 5Mbps to stream from popular services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Prime/Unlimited Music.

Survey

The Virtual Survey itself will take approx. 10-15 minutes. A trained Zuma installer will help check the installation area and advise on items such as Zuma configuration, electrical wiring requirements and ceiling preparation along with testing your home network to ensure you have the most optimal experience once installed.

Think of it as a pre-flight check of ‘light and sound’ before take off!

Installation

Installing a Zuma is just like installing a regular downlight.

Once physically installed and powered up, the Zuma app will then assist you to setup your Zuma and ensure you are good to go!

If you are going to use your own installer, you can find our install guides within our Resource Library area.

We are also here to help you and your installer during installation so feel free to give us a call if needed.

The cost of an installation will vary based on the number of units being installed and the area that they are being installed in and just he same as having a downlight installed or replaced.

A typical Zuma installation costs between £220 and £320 (4-8 units).

Of course! Our Zuma team will be able to help you to manage each of the services such as lighting, radio, music and working with devices such as your Apple TV.

A most common reason for smart lighting systems to seemingly randomly turn on is when there has been a temporary loss of power or a power cut and power has now been resumed.

In a scenario like this, your Zuma or smart lighting device will automatically turn on once power has been resumed. This a safety feature. We have pre-set the value to brightness at 50%.

The Circadian feature is currently set for customers based in the UK.

If you are based in the UK and still experiencing a problem, please contact us using the options below and we can help investigate this for you.

Audio

Here are some troubleshooting steps to help:

1) Check to see if your phone is connected to the same network. It could be that you are currently connecting to the internet via LTE 4G/5G or possibly another network.

2) Open the Zuma app and select your room.

3) Check to see if the audio speaker icon has a line through it (muted). If so, click to un-mute to resume audio.

Check if the volume slider is set to the desired level.

Check the audio source application (Spotify, Airplay2, Amazon Music, Tidal) for volume control.

Also note, some applications use their own volume.

Although it’s your audio quality that’s affected, it could be related to something else such as the audio streaming service you are using, or your network performance at this time.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to help:

1) Check to see if the issue happens with another audio source. For example – if you were playing audio via Airplay, try playing the same track through Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music.

2) Check to see if the issue happens with another audio device. Try and play the same music directly on your phone or another speaker-enabled device if you have one.

3) If the issues persist, try power cycling your main router. After performing a power cycle your network connection should be refreshed.

Should you still be experiencing a problem please contact us and we will help investigate your problem with you.

Please get in touch, we’ll help perform a full system diagnostic to help get to the bottom of the problem.

Networking

The Zuma Lumisonic supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac/2.4Ghz/5Ghz network standards.

Other tips:

1) If you can stream music or media content to your iPhone then the performance should be the same for your Zumas.

2) As for network speed requirements we would recommend a minimum of 5MB download to ensure you have good quality audio streaming.

If you are looking to test your network, we recommend trying a speed test service such as SPEEDTEST.COM or FAST.COM

There are two options available to get your Zuma back up and running.

  1. Change your new Wi-Fi network details to match the old router details.
  2. Perform hardware based factory reset for each of your Zuma units.

Here’s the steps to change my Wi-Fi details:

  1. Connect to your new Wi-Fi network using the password provided by the new ISP.
  2. Once connected, check the back of your router to find the IP address of your main Router page.
Note*: Most commonly the address might be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254.
  3. Type the IP address in your browser and visit it.
  4. You will be greeted by the router login page, where you need to type in the administrator login and password (these details can be found on the back of the router).
  5. Once logged in, just navigate over to ”Wireless’ tab and change the Wi-Fi name and password to match your old one.
  6. Once finished, press ”Save” and your router might reboot to apply the settings.
  7. Finally, reboot any network dependant devices in your home.

Your Zuma units will automatically re-connect to your router afterwards.

You can check the quality of the network of each Zuma from within the Zuma app Manage area and look at the Link Quality value.

If you require assistance, give us a call and we can help ensure you have an optimal setup.

In our modern world, home networks can be a complex thing.

As part of our quality assurance, we have tested various network configurations.

If you have any questions about your current or planned network setup, feel free to give us a call and we can help advise.

It has been identified that some models of the BT HomeHub may exhibit a poor performance experience where they struggle to support a variety of networked products designed for the home.

If you have a BT HomeHub and your Zuma system is struggling to work, there are several options available:

1. Enter your BT hub Settings and set your BT hub to Mode 2 or Mode 3.

Instructions on how to change this settings can be found here: https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/what-is-the-wireless-mode-feature-on-my-bt-smart-hub-

2. Another simple workaround is to connect a third party Router to the BT Hub and connect the Zuma units through the new router.

To do this, turn the Wi-Fi off on the BT Hub and set the SSID, Password & Security type on the new Router to match your existing Wi-Fi details.

This should improve connectivity of both Zuma & other struggling network devices.

Please contact us if you need further assistance with this.

Note: Some BT Wi-Fi extender discs (Black or White models) struggle to support AirPlay2 devices. If you have these Wireless Access Points, we recommend you swap these access points for third party access points and your issues with AirPlay2 devices should resolve themselves.
